Accurate measurements are the foundation of a successful kitchen renovation, especially when ordering made-to-order units. Even a small error can lead to cabinets that don’t fit, gaps between units and walls, or delays and added costs.

• A sturdy, retractable tape measure
• Graph paper or a sketch pad
• Pencil and eraser
• A level, to check for uneven floors or walls
• Straight edge or ruler
• Camera or smartphone, for reference photos

Step-by-step guide

Step 1: Sketch your layout

Draw a rough outline of your kitchen, including all walls, windows, doors and structural features like columns or beams. It doesn’t need to be perfect — it’s just a reference for recording measurements.

Step 2: Measure wall lengths

Measure each wall from corner to corner, noting the segments between any windows or doors. Measure each wall twice to ensure accuracy.

Step 3: Measure ceiling height

Measure from floor to ceiling in multiple spots — record the shortest measurement, since ceilings can be uneven, and use a level to check for sloping.

Step 4: Measure windows and doors

Note the width and height of each window and door, and their distance from the nearest wall, including sills, trims and frames.

Step 5: Locate utilities

Record the position of plumbing, electrical outlets, switches, light fixtures, and any gas lines. Photograph them for reference.

Step 6: Measure appliances

If keeping existing appliances, record their width, height and depth, including clearances for ventilation and door swings.

Step 7: Check for uneven floors or walls

Use a level to check evenness, and mark the highest and lowest points on your sketch so your installer can make adjustments.
